Will AI replace human work? Starting from your future career

Discussion topics posted by the instructor

This week’s class discussed AI’s impact on the labour market. Please choose a profession you hope to pursue in the future, and analyse how AI will change the way it works: which tasks may be automated? Which abilities will, in turn, become more valued? Please respond to at least one classmate’s view and offer your own perspective.

Create a “Weekly topics” board Require peer replies to one another AI automatically assesses article quality Include in the final continuous assessment mark

Debug diary: what issue did you run into today?

Discussion topics posted by the instructor

This week, I completed the sorting algorithm assignment. Please share in the Forum the difficulties you encountered during debugging: was it a logic error, a boundary condition that was not handled properly, or unfamiliarity with the syntax? How did you finally solve it? If you see classmates facing similar problems, please share your solution.

Discussion topics posted by the instructor

Please upload this week's user interview records (at least 3 participants) to your dedicated board, and organise a list of user pain points. Before next week's class, complete an initial Persona and user journey map, and post them on the board for feedback from the other groups.

Design Principles
  • Lower the participation barrier and encourage all Students to speak
  • AI real-time feedback to improve post quality
  • Scoring rules are transparent, so students clearly understand the rules
  • The Teacher retains final decision-making authority
  • Multi-scenario applications, flexibly aligned with teaching design

Board creation and management

Board Creation & Management

In the "Discussion" tab of the Course classroom, the instructor can freely create multiple discussion boards and sort and categorise them as needed.

Create a discussion board

Create Discussion Boards

Tap the "Add board" button, enter a board name and a short description. Each board represents a discussion topic or activity, for example "Weekly topic discussion", "Learning reflection", "Group project".

Recommendations

We recommend creating boards by course week or topic so that Students can quickly find the correct discussion area.

Board sorting

Board Reordering

After switching to ordering mode, you can drag to adjust the board order. Place the currently active boards first and move completed discussions to the back to keep the interface tidy.

Tag management

Label Management

Add category labels to posts (e.g. "Topic 1", "Reflections", "Questions") so students can filter and organise threads. Label names are up to you, colors come from 8 presets, and there is no limit on how many labels you create.

Recommendations

If there are different topics each week, you can create labels such as 'Week 1' and 'Week 2'. When students post, they select the relevant label, making it easier for the Instructor to review participation by week.

AI automatic scoring and Emoji system

AI Auto-Scoring & Emoji System

The Forum has a built-in automatic scoring mechanism, and every Student participation earns points. Instructors can fully customise the scoring rules and combine them with AI quality judgement to encourage high-quality discussions.

Basic scoring rules

Every participation by the Student accumulates points. When the total points reach the full-mark threshold set by the Instructor, the Student can receive the full score for that item.

Start discussion +3 points
Reply article +1 points
Short reply +0.3 points

Emoji Bonus System

Instructors can use special emoji to award bonus points to excellent posts. Emoji from ordinary Students do not affect marks; only emoji from Instructors and TAs have a scoring effect.

👍 Like +1 point
🎉 Excellent +3 points
🚀 Rocket +5 points
💤 Invalid = 0 points
👀 Review AI Instructor review

AI quality judgement

The AI model based on BERT will automatically assess post quality within 10 seconds after a Student submits a post, dividing it into three levels:

  • Excellent post: automatically mark 👍 to encourage Students to continue posting high-quality content
  • Neutral: take no action; maintain normal scoring
  • Insufficient information: automatically marked 💤, gently reminding Students to add more content

Instructors may use 👀 to review AI decisions and exclude AI emoji markers. The Instructor has the final say.

Instructors have full control

All scoring parameters can be customised in the scoring settings, so the assessment method fits your teaching design.

  • Customise the score weighting for each behaviour (posts, replies, short replies)
  • Customise the bonus points for each Emoji
  • Set the bonus cap for each post
  • Select which dashboards are included in scoring and which are not
  • Set the full-mark threshold (for example: accumulated 30 points = full marks of 10)
  • Enable or disable AI quality assessment

Post management and notifications

Post Management & Notifications

Instructors and TAs can manage posts in the Forum and maintain discussion quality. The system also sends Email notifications automatically so that interactions are not missed.

Pinned post

Pin important posts to the top of the board, such as assignment requirements, discussion rules or announcements, so that all Students can see them.

Lock post

Lock posts whose discussion has ended to prohibit new replies. Suitable for closed topics or to avoid digressions.

Delete post

Remove inappropriate content. Deleted posts will show placeholder prompts if they have replies, keeping the thread structure intact.

Email Automatic Notifications

When a Student's discussion is replied to, the system automatically sends an Email notification, ensuring the Student does not miss any interaction.

Markdown support

Built-in GitHub-style Markdown editor, supporting bold, headings, code blocks, image uploads and other formats.

File attachment

Supports uploading PDF, Word, Excel, image and other attachments (up to 10MB), making it easy to share course materials and assignments.

Leaderboard, scores and research evidence

Leaderboard, Grades & Research

Leaderboard

Leaderboard

The real-time leaderboard shows Students' participation and cumulative points. The Instructor can view the rankings of all Students, while Students can only view their own score breakdown, including: number of posts, number of replies, bonus points earned, total points, and converted grade.

Grade calculation

Score Calculation

The system automatically recalculates all Students' scores every hour. Instructors can also manually trigger 'recalculate' to update immediately. Scoring formula: when accumulated points ≥ the full-score threshold, full marks are awarded; otherwise, the score is converted proportionally.

Research-driven feature design

Uedu's AI automatic scoring feature for the Forum originates from actual teaching research. The following papers were published at IEEE international conferences, demonstrating the improvement in learning quality brought by AI post scoring.

IEEE ICALT 2023
Developing AI-Based Automated Post-Rating System to Scaffold Interdisciplinary Knowledge-Sharing
C.-K. Chang, P.-C. Chen, Z.-S. Chen, and T. M. Kuo
Research finding: a BERT-based AI automated marking system can complete quality assessment within 10 seconds after a Student posts. Students generally believe that instant feedback helps them improve post quality, plagiarism is markedly reduced, and the depth of reflection significantly improves.
