SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

Uedu × Sustainable Development Goals
Learn from the real world

Uedu is a free, non-commercial public education platform independently developed by Assistant Professor Chia-Kai Chang and adopted across institutions. This page explains how the platform’s existing functions correspond to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — each correspondence is backed by functions and data in actual operation, rather than being a declarative label.

4 items Substantive target matches
1,200+ Integrated environmental monitoring stations

Substantive match, no label attached

List only objectives with actual operational functions and data support; do not enumerate seventeen items merely for completeness

Evidence-based claims

Corresponding items marked as "in progress" in ongoing research are not claimed to be effective before empirical results are obtained

Free and public

The platform is non-commercial and completely free for schools and students. Operating resources are supported through a regulated donation mechanism (fundraising in progress), and are currently absorbed by the platform itself

Quality Education

Quality Education

Make generative AI a learning companion for every learner

Uedu's core mission is SDG 4: lowering the threshold for access to quality educational resources through AI teaching assistants, AI companions and open courses. The platform is completely free for schools and Students, and the interface is designed with learners without a technical background in mind — any logged-in user can create their own AI channel without needing any programming background.

  • ClassroomGPT AI TA and AIDA Learning Companion: AI dialogic learning in course contexts; AIDA guides Student thinking with Socratic questioning
  • Uedu Open Open Course: import open courseware (OCW, OpenCourseWare) and combine it with AI dialogic learning, without enrolment restrictions
  • UeduGPTs self-service channel: any logged-in user can create their own AI channel and share it with classmates, with no programming background required
  • Exploring learning traits and cognitive testing toolkit: using open-source psychological scales and scientifically validated cognitive tests to help Students understand their own learning traits

Bring real-world environmental data into classroom discussion

Uedu integrates public environmental data from more than 1,200 monitoring stations of the Central Weather Administration and the Ministry of Environment (weather, air quality). In AI conversations in class, students can directly ask, 'How is the air quality at my school today?' or 'Which county or city in Taiwan has the highest PM2.5 this week?' — environmental issues are no longer abstract statements in textbooks, but inquiry materials that begin with the environment they live in.

  • City and county environmental time-series lookup and nationwide ranking: city and county comparisons and time-series exploration of indicators such as the air quality index (AQI), PM2.5, temperature and rainfall
  • School-level environmental exposure: weighted estimates based on nearby monitoring stations of the environmental conditions at the school location, bringing course discussion back to the environment in which learners live
  • Original teaching materials for atmospheric and earth science: original teaching materials combining the GLOBE observation protocol with the curriculum, supporting inquiry and practical courses

Environmental data sources are government open data from the Central Weather Administration and the Ministry of Environment; the platform is used only within classroom learning scenarios and does not redistribute or provide the data as a separate service.

Partnership

Partnerships for the Goals

An open ecosystem adopted across campuses and shared internationally

Uedu is deployed in many universities, colleges and senior secondary schools across Taiwan, and promotes inter-institutional exchange through academic networks. The platform uses a funding structure of 'schools providing their own keys, or support through regulated donations' to ensure sustainable operation does not depend on commercialisation.

  • Cross-campus deployment and branded entry point: each institution has its own dedicated subdomain entry point; when a new school joins, it only needs configuration, not code changes
  • International academic publication and exchange: research findings continue to be published at international academic conferences such as LAK, L@S and IEEE EMBC
  • Academic community network: collaborating with academic organisations such as the Taiwan Association for Artificial Intelligence Multimodal Learning Analytics (TAIMS) to promote exchange
  • Senior school collaboration and university transition: inquiry guidance and competency task tools for Senior school classes, linking to self-directed learning at university level

Reduced Inequalities

Research in progress

Educational equity premised on being free and public

The platform is free and non-commercial; this in itself is a structural commitment to reducing the digital divide. Research on educational equity is still underway, and we choose to make claims only after obtaining empirical results.

Sustainability depends on trustworthiness

Uedu adopts "Privacy by Design" as a design principle. We believe that the foundation of a sustainable education ecosystem is learners' trust in the platform.

Informed consent

Data collection is conducted with informed consent, with the purpose and protection measures explained first, before inviting participation

Research Ethics Review

The research use has passed research ethics review, and the data are analysed in de-identified, aggregated form

Retain choice rights

All non-essential fields retain the 'Do not disclose' option, and users may modify or withdraw it at any time

Make sustainability a genuine inquiry in the classroom

We welcome instructors from universities and colleges nationwide to trial and exchange ideas, and to bring real-world data and issues into general education classrooms.
