蔣渭水以醫師身分，仿臨床病歷的格式為「台灣」這位病人問診：載明姓名、年齡與病症，診斷其罹患「知識的營養不良症」，並開出以教育與文化為本的處方，主張大量施予學校教育、圖書館與讀報社等。全篇以診斷書為喻，構思巧妙、說理生動，是台灣近代散文中膾炙人口的名篇。
