本詩為一九二五年二林蔗農事件而作，副題「寄二林的同志」。詩人以沉痛激昂的筆調，記寫蔗農為爭取合理權益而挺身抗爭、終致犧牲的經過，歌詠他們在覺悟之下所付出的代價。作品將社會事件入詩，是台灣新詩早期兼具社會關懷與敘事性的代表作，流露對土地與勞動者的深切同情。
