長篇小說以美濃笠山的一座農場為背景，描寫一對同姓青年男女的戀情。兩人情投意合，卻因客家社會「同姓不婚」的傳統禁忌而不見容於世，終釀成悲劇。作品取材自作者自身的婚姻遭遇，藉山村農場的勞作與人情，寫出個人情感與舊習俗之間的拉扯，是鍾理和鄉土文學中份量厚重的代表長篇。
